Stanley Schwartz is an assistant professor of history at Cedarville University. He completed his PhD at Temple University in 2024, following the defense of a dissertation that examined how Civil War service influenced Union and Confederate junior officers. His research traced how a group of these men used their uniformed careers to enter politics and created a martial identity that influenced their policymaking on defense and diplomacy. He is working on turning the dissertation into a book while pursuing other projects on the Civil War, US national security, and American intellectual history. Before he enrolled at Temple, he worked as a Fulbright Postgraduate Scholar in Australia, researching the history of Australian politics, defense, and relations with the United States.
As military enlistments fall in the United States, policymakers ponder solutions to the recruitment and morality crisis.
