The Jamal Khashoggi affair presents the perfect opportunity for the United States to press Saudi Arabia for more progress on its horrendous human rights record. 

For Nicholas Kristof to say that Americans “are willing to starve Yemeni schoolchildren” because “we dislike Iran’s ayatollahs” is so simplistic as to be immoral in itself.

Many Christian elites will not like Donald Trump’s United Nations speech this week, whose key phrase was “we reject the ideology of globalism and accept the doctrine of patriotism.”

This week the Big Apple is hosting the UN General Assembly, and while world leaders will discuss many challenges, we expect a theme to dominate the US representatives’ views: sovereignty. 

The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on several members of the Burmese military, Border Guard Police commanders, and two Burmese military units for their involvement in mass atrocities. More states should do the same.

Christians who see Palestinians as human beings made in the image of God should not be satisfied with the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Those who are satisfied don’t know what it looks like.

The world still requires order, and that still requires sacrifice. Many now believe we can have world order, peace, stability, and prosperity on the cheap. We can coast merely on soft power (Democrats) or by promoting national interests (Republicans) without the hard work and heavy lifting required to actually maintain that order, whether through diplomacy or hard power.

Last month was a significant step forward for international religious freedom advocacy, but much work remains to be done.
