During Trump’s presidency, America’s role as the world leader has been questioned by allies, adversaries, and the president himself.

Turning our backs on NATO will result in an uncertain future wrought with war and conflict that will cost America far more in the end.

Putin, like the czars and boyars of old Russia, is a kleptocrat and tyrant who torments his opponents, sometimes murders them, represses voices of dissent, exploits religion, shamelessly deploys propaganda, presides over a labyrinth of espionage and manipulation, and warily views the world as vicious and zero-sum.

Destroying institutions like NATO rarely happens in a spectacular blowup. Rather, it happens through a gradual undermining of members’ commitments and values.

Yes, the NATO allies must do their part. President Trump is right to demand they do more to provide for their own defense. At the same time, NATO provides a mechanism to prevent the bloodshed and oppression so prevalent in European history.

Christians should not be overly concerned about Trump meeting Putin, for now at least.

What are America’s objectives with Russia? Most chatter about the Trump-Putin summit focuses on their personalities and Russian attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election. We at Providence, as Christian “realists” and Americans, prefer to identify strategic goals that enhance American security and global equilibrium.

The choice is not between open borders or Birkenau. The choice which lies before us is whether or not we will make a government which reflects the divine justice for which government exists.
